Grateful Dead. 50 Aniversario. Conexión Española. Joe and the Jaguars

(English version)

During the over 35 years I've been researching and deepening the work and miracles of the Grateful Dead not cease to amaze new and amazing discoveries every day. My constant search for more documentation for my next book "Spanish Jam, Grateful Dead Spanish Connection" which will be published soon in a unique Spanish-English bilingual edition, in which I intend to collect and display all published in Spain over 50 years about the band, whether articles, reports, references , criticism, pictures, interviews, etc ... as well as varied and anecdotal connections and whose title comes from the series of articles with the same interest started writing on this blog (see tags Conexión española ) in 2009, it has led me to a discovery really amazing, I want to share here in advance of the book.

Mickey Hart while serving his military service in the US Army Air Base in Torejon de Ardoz (Madrid) in the years 1963-1965, which devoted a third of these entries, became part of a group with three other military Americans over the Air Base led by Joe Bennett, who along popular combo of rockabilly The Sparkletones, in 1957 had achieved a budding success with the theme "Slacks Blacks" I get to take the position 17 of the Top 100 Billboard where it remained over four months, even getting guest appearances on popular television shows of the late 50s as The Nat King Cole Show, American Bandstand and The Ed Sullivan Show.
The four American soldiers formed at the Base of Torrejon de Ardoz in 1963 the group Joe and the Jaguars coming to offer several performances in Madrid, including the January 26, 1964 in the legendary Circus Price morning sessions in which they appear in the poster as Jou and the Jaguars, also serving as backing band for several American singers who visited the air base in those years, like Minnie Pearl or Warner Mack.

Thanks to these performances in Madrid, together with the visit Dion DiMucci of Dion & amp; The Belmonts made to the base in 1963, for his appearance in the TVE (Spanish Television) program as part of the promotion of their records distributed in Spain by Hispavox (Spanish Record Company), Joe and the Jaguars drew the attention of the producers of the same company, which quickly they offered them to record some songs. They recorded eight songs in one session, divided into two EPs, two instrumentals and two songs in Spanish plus four other issues as instrumental accompanying a very young of only 17 years promising singer named Karina, who happened to be his first and more rock EP, considered today as part of collectors.
The same Spanish record company, Hispavox, was the distributor in Spain of the catalog of Warner Records and since 1970 would publish several Grateful Dead albums in Spain.

After this pair of records Joe Bennet recorded four more songs solo for another EP edited by Hispavox in May 1964.
After completing his military obligations in 1965 the group dissolved and each returned to their place of origin in the United States. Joe Bennett got his title of Air Force pilot, was kept for 11 more years in the military and continued playing in few bands in various served destinations including the Vietnam War, after leaving the army Joe returned to his Spartanburg native in South Carolina trying unsuccessfully a career as a country singer, was devoted to advertising and musical education and finally just as air traffic controller. In turn Mickey Hart leaves Spain and the Air Force and back to New York, is preparing to become a professional drummer. Which in the words of Mickey himself, meant "learning to deal with the musicians union." Then he decided to move to San Francisco to work her father offers in Hart Music, his store batteries Bay Area, renowned Drum City later at the suggestion of Mickey himself. When the Count Basie Big Band at the Fillmore Auditorium show August 20 or 21, 1967, Mickey comes to the performance dazzled by his good friend Basie drummer Sonny Payne; that night he was introduced to a young drummer named Bill Kreutzman, who just a few months later, on the night of September 29, 1967 will be invited to sit in the saddle of the battery on the performance of the Grateful Dead in the Straight Theater San Francisco, for the legendary "Alligator & gt; Caution, Don't Stop On Tracks" that night. Immediately after the performance Mickey Hart is invited by the rest of the band to become the second battery of the Grateful Dead. What comes next is 50-year history of the greatest American Rock band & amp; Roll of all time.
Mickey Hart in an interview with David Gans for the book "Conversations with the Dead" (Page 249), 1991 tells him that had a drum store in San Carlos, Ca and had a band that does not remember the name but the guitarist was Joe Bennett, who had been the leader of The Spatkletones.
But instead in his biography "Drumming Magic. A Journey Into the Spirit of Percussion" published in 1990, in the chapter devoted to his stay in the Air Force Base Torrejon de Ardoz (Madrid) (pages 85-92) does not mention at any time the group Joe and the Jaguars.
Not until his fourth book "Songcatchers. In the World of Music" in 2003 written with the editor of National Geographic KM Kostyal, which already seem to remember something else the group of the military base and includes a picture with Joe Bennett those years.

And it was not until recently that Joe Bennett suffering from Parkinson's disease and dementia associated with Parkinson's disease because of their exposure to Agent Orange while serving in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, has been trying to get all the benefits of the Veterans Administration to help cover the costs of their medical treatment that are denied, and by organizing volunteer help and support musicians from South Carolina, Carma. Inc and the invaluable generosity of Mickey Hart, who ask him to take the stage on May 8, 2013 in concert with the Mickey Hart Band in Halton Theater in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Joe Bennett with the band played his legendary "Black Slacks" and within days the May 11 Mickey gave a show at the Kempton Music Center in Kempton, PA of that part of the proceeds would be intended to be used to help Joe Bennett to cover expenses medical. According to a press release from the Rex Foundation, Hart "also he wants to raise awareness about the challenges that both Vietnam veterans like Joe face, and the power of music therapy to help people with health problems like Joe".
